An apartment rather than a room
Altis Prime is an apartment hotel, which in practice means suites with a separate lounge, a work area and a fitted kitchenette rather than a bedroom with a desk in it. There are around 78 of them, from studios up to three-bedroom apartments and a penthouse, and there is a rooftop with a sundeck.
For getting ready that is a genuinely better space than a standard hotel room. A kitchenette means a sink that is not the bathroom sink. A lounge means the person having their hair done and the two people waiting are not sitting on the same bed. If three or four of you are getting ready together, this is the easier kind of room to do it in.
The setup in your room
The appointment happens in your room and needs almost nothing from it: a plug, an upright chair rather than an armchair, and a metre of space beside a window or a lamp. The artist brings a full kit, her own hot tools and her own mirror light, so a room lit for the evening rather than for foundation at ten in the morning is not a problem.
A desk or a dressing table helps and is not required. Nothing is fixed to the walls and the room is left as it was found. If two or three of you are getting ready together, say so when you book, because at that point the size of the room matters more than the schedule does.
Groups and longer stays
The property is set up for long stays, which is the kind of trip an apartment hotel suits: a work trip that runs two weeks, a family staying before a wedding, a small group in town for several days.
One artist working through a group in sequence is much more efficient in one large suite than across three rooms on different floors. If several of you want hair or makeup, book it as one appointment with one arrival time and let us order it, rather than as separate bookings that happen to be on the same day.
Timing it
We work backwards from the hour you need to be ready, not forwards from an arrival time. As a planning figure, a blow-dry is about 45 minutes, makeup about 45 minutes, and hair and makeup together for one person about 90 minutes to two hours depending on the style. An updo takes longer than a blow-dry.
Avenida da Liberdade is a few minutes downhill and Marquês de Pombal is immediately north, so an evening out starts quickly. The airport run from here is usually 15 to 25 minutes outside peak hours.
Hair goes first and makeup second, so hot tools and hairspray never go near a finished face.
