Half an hour, and one bridge

Herdade do Perú sits at Brejos de Azeitão, and the estate puts itself about thirty minutes south of Lisbon. That is a fair figure outside peak times. The single variable is the bridge: the 25 de Abril carries the whole southbound flow, and on a Friday evening or a summer Saturday it can add a substantial amount to any estimate.

For a wedding morning the answer is not complicated. We leave earlier than the map suggests, and the getting-ready session is scheduled with the crossing built in rather than assumed away. Tell us the ceremony hour and we work backwards from it including the bridge, not excluding it.

Rooms on site, and what that buys you

The estate describes a palace and guest quarters with around thirteen rooms, sleeping up to about twenty-six people, with more accommodation nearby. That matters more for the beauty schedule than for anything else on the page.

When the bride, the bridesmaids and the mothers all sleep on the estate, one artist can work through the whole party in sequence in a single building without a car journey between appointments. That is the arrangement that makes a group realistic in one morning. The alternative, where half the party is in Lisbon and half is on site, roughly doubles the time the same work takes.

Which room the party is given, and from what hour, is set per booking. Confirm access with the estate rather than assuming the bridal suite is free from breakfast.

Vineyard, gardens and a warm afternoon

The estate runs to roughly 350 hectares of vineyard, meadow and formal gardens, laid out with a symmetry the owners compare to Versailles, with the Arrábida hills on one side and the coast on the other. It is open ground, which means sun and, later in the day, some air moving across it.

The practical version: a summer wedding here is hot in the afternoon, and the drinks hour is very likely outdoors. Hair and makeup are built for a long warm day rather than for the first hour of photographs. Less product weight, a base that holds without sitting on the skin, and pinning that survives a breeze across open ground.

Photographs on the formal gardens sit in strong, clean light. That is flattering and unforgiving in equal measure, which is an argument for a trial if you are unsure about how heavy a look you want.

Guests, and who books separately

With around twenty-six beds on the estate, most guests at a large wedding here will be staying elsewhere, usually in Lisbon or around Setúbal and Azeitão. Anyone who wants hair or makeup will want it where they are staying, before the drive out.

Those are separate bookings with a separate clock. If mothers, bridesmaids or guests want appointments, mention it in the first enquiry. It changes what one artist can cover, and it is far easier to plan in advance than to add three weeks out.

Common questions

Do you travel to Azeitão?

Yes. It is about half an hour south of Lisbon over the bridge. A travel supplement applies, confirmed in writing before you book.

Can you do the bride and the bridesmaids in the morning?

Yes, in sequence, and it is much easier when the party is sleeping on the estate. Allow roughly two hours for the bride and about 45 minutes per additional person per service.

Will hair hold outdoors all afternoon?

It is built to. Open ground and a warm afternoon are the design constraints, so the style is pinned and finished for a long day rather than for the first photographs.

Are you affiliated with the estate?

No. We are not affiliated with Herdade do Perú and this page is not endorsed by them.
