Where it is and what that does to the morning

Quinta do Torneiro sits in the greater Lisbon area, and the venue describes itself as roughly twenty minutes from Lisbon airport and a short drive from the city, Cascais, Sintra and Estoril. For a wedding morning that is the easy end of the scale: the artist travels out rather than up a mountain, and traffic is the only variable worth building a buffer for.

In practice it means the getting-ready session can start later than it would at a Sintra hill venue. If your ceremony is at five in the afternoon and you are getting ready on site, a start somewhere around eleven is comfortable for a bride plus two or three attendants. If you are getting ready at a hotel in Lisbon and driving out, add the transfer and a margin for a Saturday afternoon on the A5 or the second ring road.

The house, and where people actually get ready

The estate is a preserved eighteenth-century manor built as a summer house. Its best-known feature is the hand-painted azulejo tilework, around two and a half centuries old, running through the main rooms, along with a French garden, a seventeenth-century chapel and a covered terrace. There is a main suite and a handful of further rooms in the house.

Which room a bridal party is given varies by booking, so we do not publish a floor plan here. What matters for the appointment is smaller than that: one plug, one upright chair, and a window. Tiled rooms are cool and often shaded, which is pleasant in July and slightly dim in the morning, so the artist brings her own mirror light rather than relying on the room.

What the setting does to hair and makeup

A courtyard wedding in the Lisbon summer is warm and still rather than windy. Heat, not wind, is the thing to design around: foundation that does not move in the late afternoon, and hair that is pinned to hold through a long outdoor drinks hour rather than styled to look perfect only in the first photographs.

The tiles are also a real consideration for makeup. Blue and white azulejo bounces cool light onto skin, and photographs taken against them read cooler than the same face outdoors. It is a small adjustment in the base and the blush, but it is the kind of thing that is easier to get right when the artist knows the setting in advance.

Guests, and who is where

Quinta do Torneiro's proximity to the city means many guests stay in Lisbon rather than on site and drive out for the ceremony. That splits the morning: the bride and the immediate party get ready at the venue, and guests, mothers and bridesmaids who are staying in town often book their own hair or makeup at their hotel before leaving.

Those are two different bookings with two different clocks. If several people in your party want hair or makeup and are not all in the same building, tell us early. One artist can cover a surprising amount in a morning when the order is planned, and almost none of it when three people in three hotels all want to be finished at once.

Common questions

Do you come to Quinta do Torneiro?

Yes. It is within our normal Lisbon travel area, so there is no supplement for the journey. Tell us the date and the ceremony hour and we will send back a timeline.

What time would you arrive?

Worked backwards from the hour you need to be ready, not forwards from an arrival time. For a bride and two attendants before a late-afternoon ceremony, that usually means arriving late morning.

Can you do hair and makeup for the whole party?

Yes, in sequence. One senior artist does both. As a planning figure, allow about two hours for the bride's hair and makeup together and about 45 minutes per additional person per service.

Are you connected to the venue?

No. We are not affiliated with Quinta do Torneiro and this page is not endorsed by them. Book the venue directly and book us separately.
